Archaic Carved Turquoise Pendant, Shang Dynasty, 13th Century B.C.

We are offering this very rare and beautiful Chinese antiquities item of a carved turquoise pendant from Shang Dynasty. The beautiful pendant was carved of pale turquoise slab into a "Taotie" mask, which was the principal motif of the Shang Dynasty artistic repertory. The surface of both sides is finely incised and carved in intaglio to depict this early mystical motif with archaic beauty. The stone is encrusted and discolored from burial. Except for a small patch of corroded surface, this magnificent archaic carving from late Shang Dynasty is in excellent condition with a superb patina. This fine pendant was acquired in 1960's in Japan from an old Japanese collector. This is a rare opportunity for serious collectors to acquire an authentic archaic hard stone carving with such fine workmanship and early provenance.
