Fine Blue-and-White Peony Jar, Choson, 19th Century

This is a fine Korean blue-and-white jar produced in the Royal kiln of Punwon-ri area. The globular body sits on a short splayed foot ring and has a short neck opening to a wider mouth rim. Two sprays of blossoming peony flower branches decorate the globular body which is framed on the upper end with large Ruyi florets and key fret patterns. The painting was executed in rich cobalt pigment under a fine white glaze with bluish tint. The unglazed foot rim is adhered with kiln sand. This beautiful jar has suffered from three chips and associated restored breaks at the mouth and foot rims as photographed. This is another fine example of Choson blue-and-white wares from the Rai Collection. The condition problem does not take away the beautiful painting, elegant shape and superb glaze of this fine Korean blue-and-white peony jar.
