Fine Zitan Carved Calligraphy Brush Pot, Qing Dynasty

We are offering a very fine Chinese scholar's art of a brush pot with fine carved decoration made of Zitan wood from Qing dynasty. The small brush pot has a stylised cylindrical shape with a flared mouth rim and a slightly splayed foot. The flat base has a small opening which is fitted with a plug. The exterior is carved in intaglio relief of a scene of wind-swept bamboo grove among rocks. A beautiful 14-character inscription or artist's signature in running script is carved on the right side of the bamboo grove. The sparsely carved decoration matches perfectly with the elegant shape. The wood surface displays fine wood grain and dark purplish brown color typical of early Zitan wood. Except for a small chip at the mouth rim, this beautiful Zitan brush pot is in excellent condition with superb patina.
Size: mouth diameter: 9.0cm; height: 11.4cm
