Antique Chinese Bamboo Lohan, Qing Dynasty

This fine bamboo carving of an articulate Buddhist Lohan was created from a fine pieces of bamboo root. The elaborately carved sculpture depicts a fierce-looking Lohan sitting in a relaxed position on rock works with Buddhist beads in one hand and a banana leaf fan on the other. The carver skillfully used the root knobs to enhance the folds of the robe and the unisas on Lohan's head. The bamboo has developed a mellow brown to red patina from years of handling. This is a rare find as early stand-alone bamboo sculptures of scholarly taste hardly ever show up on the open maket. This is another fine scholar's art items from our vast collection. This beautiful Bamboo Lohan is in excellent condition except for a small chips to the extremity of Lohan's robe. Size: 19.7cm; Width: 11cm; Depth: 8.5cm
