Antique Jadeite Ink Cake Stand, 19th Century

Up for auction is a beautiful antique jadeite carving of an ink cake stand. The rectangular stand is carved in the shape of a squat table with scroll feet. The top of the stand is carved in deep relief of two butterflies among flowering petunia flowers. The carver skillfully used the large patches of vivid green area to enhance the decoration. The flying butterflies are depicted conspicuously with the bright natural green color on a ground of semi-translucent white color. The decorative motif is elegant and elaborate while the shape is artistic for this rare jadeite carving. Antique jadeite pieces are difficult to find as most jadeite carvings on the market are either color-treated or newly-carved with gaudy decoration. The carving and decorative style of this ink cake stands points to a 19th Century date. Except for minor hips to the surface at extremities, the jadeite carving is in excellent condition.
