Blanc de Chine Scholar, China, 18th Century

This is a very fine and beautiful Chinese Blanc de Chine porcelain statue of a seated scholar. Blanc de Chine ( White of China in English ) is a name given by early French collectors for this type of ware from Southern China province of Fujian.

Most Blanc de Chine statues are Guanyin or other Buddhist icons. It is rare to find an early Blanc de Chine statue with this subject of an elegant seated scholar. The statues portraits the scholar in his relaxed pensive position with one hand resting on an arm rest stool with a lion's head.

The porcelain and the glaze are pure white with slight bluish tint. As seen on the clear photos, the statue's is extremely fine with all details of garment folds, fingers, and facial/body contours delicately finished. A small brown iron spot on the right side of the scholar's face might have been a kiln accident, but it looks like a deliberately placed mole on the face.

This is one of the most beautiful Blanc de Chine statues we have seen on the market in recent years. Except for a small chip to the lower right base as photographed, the statue is in excellent condition with all fingers intact. We strongly recommend this beauty to any serious collector of Chinese ceramics and sculptures.

Size: Height: 16.5cm; Width: 13cm ( at the widest part on the base ); Depth: 9cm ( base )
