Chinese Zitan Wood Wrist Rest, Qing Dynasty

We are offering a fine scholarly item of an elegant wrist rest made from high quality Zitan wood with elaborate carvings of scenery and calligraphy. The Qing Dynasty wrist rest is shaped like an unfolding scroll. The convex side is carved with a long poem in intaglio of superb calligraphy. The concave side is carved in deep relief into a river scenery with scholar on a mule's back while his attendant is leading the mule to cross a bridge. The wavy river water, the towering cliff, the cloud, and the over-hanging tree are all artistically carved with fine scholarly taste. Except for a small flaking at the convex side between the second and the third characters on the first right row of the calligraphy, the beautiful Zitan wood wrist rest is in excellent condition. The Zitan hardwood surface has developed a fine smooth patina from years of handling. We date this fine item from the scholar's desk to be from the 19th Century or earlier.
