Early Yellow Jade Recumbent Bixie, Song Dynasty



This is a very lovely early Chinese jade carving from Song Dynasty of a tamed mystical animal of a Bixie. The well-modeled small sculpture is carved from a block of yellow jade of superb quality. The animal sits in a relaxed position with its facial and body features finely delineated with precision and sensitivity unique to animal-shaped carving of Song Dynasty when elegant depiction of things from the nature were the prevailing trend of its art. The stone is of semi-transparent greenish-yellow color with some brown and white snow flake inclusions due to burial. The jade surface is very well polished and has developed a mellow patina only seen on old fine quality jade. Jade animal from the later period of Ming and Qing dynasties have survived in large quantities. Fine examples such as this yellow jade Bixie from earlier periods are extremely rare. This lovely jade Bixie is in excellent condition. Serious collectors of early Chinese jade should not miss out on this rare and beautiful piece.
