Elegant Soapstone Water Coupe, Qing Dynasty

This lovely water coupe from the scholar's desk is one of the most tasteful literati's art in our collection. The sea shell shaped water container for Chinese calligraphers and painter was carved from a solid block of fine red soapstone. The shell sits up as a water container for rinsing painting brush and for pouring water on to ink slab. The shape of the sea shell is artistically rendered with fine details and simplistic ridges. The surface of the brownish red soapstone has developed a fine mellow patina from years of use. This fine item came from an old Japanese collection and is preserved in an old Japanese wooden box. The water coupe is in excellent condition. Size: length: 7.7cm; height: 4.0cm, width: 4.8cm
