Incised Gilt Painted Red Lacquer Plate, Ming Dynasty

We are offering a very rare early Chinese lacquer plate decorated with fine point incised pattern and filled in with gilt before the surface was polished. The dificult and costly technique is called Qiangjin by Chinese lacquer connoisseurs. The shallow plate is lacquered red except the indented base which is covered with black lacquer. The center well is decorated with a large peony flower and its broad leaves. The side cavetto is further decorated with six incised and gilt painting panels of scholars relaxing in natural scenery. The border is decorated with continuous key frets motif. The mouth retains its original silver or bronze lining which has now turned black. The exterior is undecorated except for a triple red dots mark at the black base. Other than a few lacquer flaking and re-touching spots at the mouth rim, this beautiful lacquer plate is in excellent condition. The plate came from an old Japanese collection and has been preserved in its old traditional wooden box and wrapping cloth.

Size: diameter: 25.9cm; height: 2.3cm
