Rare Doucai Dragon Jar, Qing Dynasty



Up for sale is an interesting jar decorated with fine Doucai and underglaze-blue winged dragon. The short jar has a short mouth rim and a tall shoulder. The outside wall was painted with a underglaze-blue and a yellow enameled dragons among green-enameled clouds. The top and the bottom is each encircled with a band of red enamel over blue border pattern. The shallow base inside the foot ring is inscribed with a single Chinese character "Tian, or Sky" in underglaze blue. This type of Doucai jar with a "Tian" mark is known to have been produced during the Chenghua period of Ming Dynasty. This appears to be a reproduction of those early Ming example made during Qing Dynasty. There is a long crack extending from the bottom to the side wall as photogrpahed. Except for the long crack and surface wear to the glaze and enamel, this beautiful jar is in good condition. Size: height: 8.8cm; Body diameter: 9.5cm
