We are offering another antique Japanese tea ceremony utensil of a water container. Mizuhsashi. The thickly-potted vessel has a oblong cylindrical shape with an unglazed flat base and a tapered mouth rim. The exterior is simply decorated with a band of vertical wavy lines and another narrow band with mixed chrysanthemum florets and small abstract emblems. The decoration was achieved by inlaid of white slip in the manner of early Chosn punch'ong wares. The entire surface except the base and the mouth rim is covered with a grayish celadon glaze over a dark brown stoneware body. The vessel came out of the kiln with a few gaps and cracks at the base and side wall, which was then filled in with gold lacquer repair. An old rim chip was also restored with gold lacquer. There is a a later-fitted black wood lacquer cover and box for preservation and presentation of this water container. The beautiful water container has been preseved by our family since 1940's and is a rare find for serious antique tea ceremony article collectors. Except for the kiln fault repair and rim chips, this old Mizusashi is in excellent container.
