Korean Inlaid Celadon Bowl, Koryo, 12th Century



This is a very fine and beautiful Korean inlaid celadon bowl with beautiful decoration and rare conical shape from the 12th Century of Koryo Dynasty. The large bowl has a short conical shape with a slightly inward curved mouth rim. The interior is profusely decorated with a central medallion and a four flying cranes among delicate cloud motif. A continuous band of vines encircles the upper rim above a double-ring and below a single ring. The exterior is decorated with a central band of four chrysanthemum medallion among flowers. The lower section is surrounded with vertical leaves motifs. The upper rim is lined with a delicate band of four flying cranes among cloud motif. All decoration were executed with delicate fine-line or minute detail inlaid of white and black clays. The short foot sits on a slightly indented base which is fully glazed with three spurs encrusted with sand and and quartz particle's. The glaze is of the finest quality Koryo celadon with even green color. A band of thicker glaze accumulated at the mouth rim to form a jewel-like ring. Sumptuous inlaid celadon items with delicate decoration and superb glaze such as this bowl were reserved for high quality vessels intended for court use. There is a small brown spot at the outer rim due to glaze gap which is not a rim chip. Except for a ring of kiln crack in the exterior as photographed, the bowl is in excellent condition with a pristine glaze.
