Korean Punch'ong White Slip Incised Vase, 15th Century
Up for auction is another important Korean ceramics from our collection which we are showcasing each week on eBay. This pear-shaped vase belongs to a group of wares called by the Japanese connoisseurs as "Kohiki or Powder-Induced" wares for its skillful use of white slips under a clear glaze. The Korean name for this type of ware is called " Punch'ong or Powder Blue" for the bluish tint of its clear glaze. The vase was first brushed horizontally with a wet white slips before it was carved with a sharp knife and then covered with a clear glaze. The ovoid body was simply carved with a band of large lily flowers in bold line drawings with near Avant-garde style. The upper shoulder is further carved with stylised vertical leaves motif. The deep base inside the tall foot ring is glazed with now-degraded gray glaze. The thick unglazed foot rim exposes the dark brown clay. The foot ring has two restored missing pieces. The mouth rim and the short neck have some glaze flaking and peel. Other than the restored foot ring and glaze flaking, this beautiful and rustic Choson period Punch'ong vase is in good condition. Size: height: 26cm; body diameter: 16cm
