Large Punch'ong Inlaid Jar with Punched Floret, 15th Century



We are offering this other fine and important Korean ceramics from our large collection of East Asian art. This large celadon jar belongs to the group of early Choson ware of inlaid design called Punch'ong by Korean connoisseurs. The large ovoid jar has a splayed foot and a constricted short neck rising to a sharply flared mouth rim. The exterior is decorated with a large area of chrysanthemum floret in punched and then inlaid technique. The closely-positioned floret looks like a sea of falling flowers on the ground. The shoulder is encircled with a large band of downward vertical leaves which is separated with the central scene by a narrow band of delicate key fret motif. The lower section is decorated with stylised lotus petals arranged in a continuous vertical bands. The base inside the short foot ring is covered with glaze now mostly degraded to grayish white. The glaze is of finely crackled clear green color with areas of degraded glaze as photographed. Other than minor degraded glaze patches and a chip at the foot ring as photographed, this large and beautiful Punch'ong inlaid jar is in excellent condition.
