Rare Carved Jade Ink Slab, Ming Dynasty



We are offering a fine Chinese scholar's items of true literati's taste of a large jade ink slab carved from a block of good quality celadon mutton fat jade. The ink slab retains thr elegant shape of a jade boulder and is decorated with fine relief and reticulated carving of Lingzhi and three friends of Winter: bamboo, plum blossom, and pine. The carver skillfully used the contour of the boulder to depicts the three-dimensional entwining tree branches and trunks as well as providing or the flat slab surface for grinding ink sticks. The back side is left undecorated with a flattened base for stability when placing the ink slab on desk. The jade is of grayish celadon color with areas of natural brown veining and inclusion. The surface is well-polished with fine age patina which is typical of old mutton fat jade. This truly tasteful Literati's items is on of the best scholar's items in our collection. It is in excellent condition.
