Rare Imitation-Bronze Censer, Yongzheng Mark & Period
We are offering this very rare Qing Imperial monochrome porcelain made to imitate Ming style bronze censer with reddish cafe-au-lait glaze. The vessel modeled after the early Ming Dynasty Xuande incense burners which were treasured for their fine surface patination and elegant shapes. The tripod censer stands on three short sharply tapered feet with its ovoid lower body rising to a constricted neck and a flared mouth. The half-pagoda shaped ear is attached to each side of the neck and lower body. The entire surface except the tips of the feet are covered with a metallic brick-red glaze spotted with fine dark silvery dots. The center of the base is carved with a four-character Youngzheng seal mark in seal script under the glaze. Part of the seal mark is obscured by the glaze. Innovative monochrome glazes such as metallic cafe-au-lait for imitating bronze surface started during the Yongzheng period and were fully exploited in the Qianlong period. Fine imitation-bronze vessel from the Yongzheng period is very rare. This beautiful tripod incense burner will be a wonderful addition to any serious collection of fine Qing Imperial porcelains. The lovely censer is in excellent condition.
