Antique Japanese Theater Noh Mask, Edo Period



We are offering a very rare and beautiful Japanese theater Noh mask from the Edo period with its original wooden box. The large mask has a well finished facial feature of a Noh play character with high hair ornament. The exterior is covered with fine color lacquer which are naturally worn with age patina and surface crackles. the interior is covered with a thick large gauge fabric and coated with black lacquer for structural re-enforcement. There are two silk cord with end tassels attached to each side of the head. A paper label with kanji inscription is glued inside the mask, which may be the name of the mask or the signature of the artisan. There are some surface pigment loss and a chip to the tip of the nose as photographed. Other than the stated, the magnificent mask is in good condition. The mask comes with an old and original wooden box. This is a rare find for serious collector of Japanese theater art.
