Fine Korean Blue-and-White Plate, 19th Century

This is a fine Korea blue-and-white plate from late Choson Period with a rare literatis's taste painting. The heavy plate has a tall flared body and a flat mouth rim. The center well is decorated with sparsely painted scenery of high mountain, country huts, willow tree and flying birds. The flat mouth rim is surrounded with a band of continuous zigzag motif. The exterior is painted with a double ring at the edge of the lower mouth rim. All decoration is painted with fine cobalt blue pigments and grayish wash typical of Choson period blue-and-white wares. It has been well-preserved in an old Japanese wooden box and old fabric padding by its past collectors.
