Antique Korean Brown-Painted Vase, 18th Century

This is a truly classic vase which meets the high standard of serious oriental ceramics collectors. The vase has a socket-shaped mouth rim and a tubular neck sitting on top of a globular body. The glaze of this vase is called Kohiki by early Japanese collectors, which was covered with white slip underneath a transparent glaze before firing. The vase is painted with a beautiful fruiting grape plant in light underglaze iron brown pigment. The painting is extremely fluent and tasteful, which could only have been accomplished by a painter from literati's circle of 18th Century Korea. Vases like this were popular among Korean elites and Japanese tea masters. Many fine examples were preserved in Japan. Just as other old Kohiki wares, this vase has suffered from glaze peel at the top of the neck and the lower part of the body. Despite peeled glaze, this rare Kohiki vase is a superb example of Korean Kohiki ware with exquisite iron brown painting. This is another item for serious collectors of oriental ceramics.

Size: 26.5cm; Body diameter: 17cm
