Antique Scholar's Desk Ornament, Qing Dynasty

This is an elegant desk ornament which demonstrates true Chinese literati's taste. The natural odd-shape block of wood is presented as a scholar's rock. The natural gnawed wood block harvested from an old tree has the basic elements of a scholar's rock such as the top-heavy vertical shape with larva-like formation as well as the irregularly positioned openings throughout. The only artificial carving is a few monkey's face simplistically carved to add some humor to this desk ornament . An original matching detachable base is fitted at the bottom of the wood block. The wood surface is covered with fine patina from years of handling by its previous owners. This is an item which does present its owner's taste for elegance. Size: Height: 28cm; width: 9.8cm; depth: 8cm
