Antique Japanese Chawan, Signed, 19th Century

This is a fine Chawan from our personal collection of Japanese tea ceremony items. Up for auction this week is a tea bowl with wonderful enamel painting of a lively singing bird and a large peony flower among beautiful leaves. The bowl is well-potted with a wide and slightly flared mouth rim. The painting over the gray ash glaze is artistically rendered, which could only have been done by a skillful artist. There is a two character Kenzan mark inscribed with brown enamel inside the shallow foot ring. This beautiful Chawan is preserved with a matching wrapping cloth in a fitted wood box. There is a four character inscription on the box which reads " Kenzan Chawan". The signature represents a group of later copies of works by Ogata Kenzan (1663-1743). This bowl is dated to 19th or earlier. This is a truly classic Japanese Chawan for serious tea ceremony article collectors. Size: Mouth rim diameter: 15.3cm; height: 8.0cm
