Carved Hardwood Wrist Rest, Qing Dynasty

This is another fine scholar's art from our collection. The zitan hardwood is carved into a semi-circular shape for functioning as a wrist rest for Chinese calligraphers. The convex side is carved in low relief with tree by a towering cliff. An eight-character inscription with the artist's signature and seal is also carved on the surface. On the concave side, there is a reticulated carving depicting a scene of three geese playing with a frog on top of rock work underneath a tall willow tree. The dark brown wood surface has developed a mellow patina from years of handling. Except for three worm holes, the elegant scholar's wrist rest is in excellent condition.
