Celadon Jar with Incised Decoration, Koryo, 12th Century

We are offering a very beautiful and important Koryo celadon with a rare shape, fine glaze and wonderful incised decoration. The vase is in the form of a wide-mouth Maebyong with a broad shoulder and a constricted lower section on a splayed foot. Four elaborately modeled loops sits on the upper shoulder for suspending ropes. The exterior is carved in fine lines with four vertical lotus flower bouquets. A continuous incised ruyi motif surrounds the top of the shoulder. A simple carved key fret band circles around the foot. Except for a small area of slightly degraded glaze, the glaze is mostly finely-crackled transparent sea green color qualified to be called Kingfisher feather or jade-like color by Korean ceramics connoisseurs. The spots where glaze pool or drip demonstrate the jewel-like quality of the finest Koryo celadon glaze produced during the peak period of 12th Century. There is a long star glaze crack extending through the body at one side of the vase and a few long glaze cracks on the surface. The shallow foot rim is unglazed and exposes the brick brown body. The base is covered with a somewhat degraded glaze. The interior is partly glazed with the unglazed area showing brick brown body material. Other than the star crack and the surface glaze crack, this magnificent Koryo celadon jar is in excellent condition. A similarly shaped and decorated celadon jar with half the size but retaining its original cover is in the collection of the Museum of Oriental Ceramics in Osaka, Japan. This is another important Korean ceramics from our large collection of oriental ceramics.
