Chinese Caved Archaic Jade Disc "Bi", Han Dynasty



This beautiful jade carving is elaborately carved and incised with a pattern of interlocking ribbons on both sides of a flat disc with a center hole. The shape of the disc is called "Bi" by ancient Chinese "Bi" was used for religious rituals through out the Centuries before Buddhist became popular in China. The jade is of fine semi-transparent grayish white with brown markings from burial. The surface decoration in shallow relief appears to have been achieved by primitive tool which left many tool marks. Similarly decorated jade disc were found in Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to 220 A.D.) archaeological sites. This elegant and sophisticated archaic jade disc is in excellent condition with fine patina. size: diameter: 10.1cm, thickness: 0.5cm
