Korean Punch'ong Inlaid Celadon Vase, Choson, 15th Century

Up for auction is another fine Korean ceramics from our large collection of Oriental ceramics acquired in the past 40 years. The punch'ong ware vase has a rare flat ovoid body and a wide cup-shape mouth rim. The two flat sides are each decorated with a large panel with lotus flowers and leaves growing out of water. The two round sides each is inlaid in black and white slip with a large stylized willow tree. The shoulder is further inlaid with a cotinuous motif of pointed leaves. The unglazed thick foot im shows the brick red stone ware body. The base inside the foot rim is thinly glazed. The simplistic inlaid design with lines and dots exemplifies the Choson tastes of rusticity and unpretentiousness. The clear celadon glaze is mostly grayish yellow with streaks of green. Other than a few patches of slightly degraded glaze, the rare punch'ong vase is in excellent condition. Size: height:25.0cm, body width:17.9cm
