Korean Celadon Maebyong Vase, Koryo, 12th Century

Up for auction is a rare and large Korean celadon vase in the classic form of a Maebyong. A Maebyong is a vessel with a small mouth, short neck, round shoulder, and constricted waist. The form is derived from the Chinese meiping, or "prunus vase." The Koryo Maebyong is distinguished from its Chinese counterpart by a saucer-shaped mouth and a body that forms a pronounced S-shaped curve, resulting in a slightly flared base. The vase has three sets of finely incised lotus bouquets under the transparent bluish brown glaze. The top of the shoulder is delicately engraved with a band of Ruyi motif. A band of key fret within a double-ring encircles the edge of the flared foot. The shallow base is glazed with five large and five small spurs used for kiln support during firing. The small saucer-shaped mouth is finely potted with thinly finished rim. There is a short crack and a very small rim chip at the mouth rim. Five visible kiln flaw cracks are located at the lower part of the vase. Except for the above condition problem, the beautiful Maebyong is in good condition. Large Koryo Maebyongs with beautifully engraved decoration are very rare and extremely beautiful. If not for its imperfect celadon color, vases of this type would be very expensive. We are offering this vase with a low starting bid and no reserve.
Size: Height: 27.3cm; Widest Part: 18.6cm; Foot Diameter: 11.2cm
