Chinese Pottery Inkcake Stand, 17th Century

We are offering an interesting and beautiful Chinese scholar's art of a stand for ink cake. The table shaped stand was made from an unique material for ink slabs called "Zheng Ni, or Orange Clay in Chinese". The high-fired pottery used fine sieved clay harvested from Yellow river. It is considered one of the best ink slab material by Chinese scholars. This ink cake stand is decorated with a scene of three scholars conversing in a beautiful natural setting. The elegant decoration appears to have been molded with details carved in low relief. There are also beautifully carved calligraphy in intaglio on the outside walls of both feet. The base is carved with four large characters and the maker's name. This is a very rare and beautiful Chinese works of art from the scholar's desk. We date it to the late Ming Dynasty due to its decorative style which is consistent with literati's art of that period. The stand is in excellent condition except some surface wear and small chips as photographed. The entire surface is covered with age patina only found in old items. This will be a wonderful addition to any collection of Chinese scholar's art.
Size: stand top: 15.2cmx9.4cm; base width (foot to foot):17.6cm; Height: 3.6cm
