Early Chrysanthemum-Shaped Agate Dish, Liao Dynasty

This is a rare Chinese antiquities item of a chrysanthemum-shaped dish made of agate from Liao Dynasty (907-1125) of Northern China. The shallow dish has a flat base with round delicately carved fluted side. The agate was carved and carefully polished to achieve a paper-thin thickness and light weight. The stone is of fine semi-transparent even gray color with minor brown and white inclusion due to long burial. Unfortunately, this beautiful dish had developed a crack during burial. As a result of the structural defect during burial, discoloration and corrosion developed around the crack which does not distract from the beauty of ancient lapidary achievement demonstrated on this fine dish. Size:diameter:16.8cm; height: 2.1cm
