Early Wood Lohan, Ming Dynasty or earlier

Up for auction is a fine early Chinese Buddhist sculpture with both spiritual and aesthetics quality. This small statue depicts a seated Buddhist disciple, Lohan, in a meditating position with his hands holding an alms bowl. The serene face with his eyes looking downward projects a solemn atmosphere in the space where this statue is placed. The surface is covered with gesso and red pigment which have been covered with accumulated ash particles from years of exposures in pilgrim sites. The statue is extremely light weighted due to old age and is in excellent condition short of a few shallow stable cracks as photographed. This beautiful early sculpture of Lohan is ideal for desk ornament or as an elegant addition to any fine interior settings. We date it to be from 15th Century or earlier.
