Fine Dated Chinese Ink Slab, 17th Century



This is a very rare Chinese stone ink slab from a 17th Century scholar's desk dated to the 10th year of Chongzhen Period (1637 A.D.) of the Ming Dynasty. The odd shaped ink slab was carved from a thick slab of fine ink stone. The front side has a small water hole and a shallow grinding well. The remaining surface is elaborately carved with stylized young dragon among curled waves in shallow relief. The back side is carved in intaglio with with an eight-character inscription, a date mark, and a name and an artist's seal. The beautiful ink slab is in excellent condition except for some surface chips on the side wall. The surface is covered with fine patina and traces of ink from years of use.
