Korean Blue-and-White Reticulated Dragon Brush Pot, Choson

This is a wonderful brush holder typical of the late Choson period with a short cylindrical shape and thick heavy wall. The entire surface is boldly carved with a dragon playing with flaming pearl among clouds. The limited space is skillfully arranged with the innovative design in broad profile executed in precise relief and reticulated carving. The magnificent carving is further enhanced with pale underglaze cobalt blue pigment. The top and bottom are both lined by a circular band with a center groove. The glaze has a distinct bluish tint. The recessed base is glazed with a patch of adhered kiln sand partly removed by grinding. The foot ring is unglazed and exposes fine white porcelain body. Except for a short foot rim crack and a few surface glaze crackles and surface abrasion, this beautiful Korean literati's item is in excellent condition.

It was used in a Choson elite's studio to demonstrate the owner's discriminating taste which has been fully expressed in this wonderful dragon brush holder.
