A Pair of Fine Doucai Cups, 18/19th Century

This is a pair of small cups made by the Qing Dynasty Imperial kiln for an Emperor's studio. Each cup is made of very thin and pure white porcelain into a bell shape. The exterior of each cup is decorated with a pair of chickens with their baby chicks among rocks, flowering plants and banana plants. The decoration was executed with the Doucai technique where painting was outlined with underglaze blue line before it was filled in with the required enamels. This technique requires two firing and the success rate is low. This two fine small cups represents the best of Doucai produced in the Qing Imperial kiln. The base of each cup is inscribed with superb calligraphy of a three-character hall mark, Hao Ran Tang. Both cups are in excellent condition with no blemish. We acquired this pair of delicate small cups in early 1970's in Japan.

Size: Mouth rim diameter: 6.2cm; Height: 4.8cm
