Pear-Shaped Pun'chong Vase with Incised Fish On White Slip, Choson, 15th Century

Up for auction is another important Korean ceramics from our collection which we are showcasing each week on eBay. This pear-shaped vase belongs to a group of wares called by the Japanese connoisseurs as "Kohiki or Powder-Induced" wares for its skillful use of slips under a clear glaze. The vase was first covered with a wet slips before it was carved with a sharp knife and then covered with a clear finely crackled glaze. This vase is simple carved with two swimming fish separated by stylized wave motif around its ovoid body. The base is left unglazed to show the dark purplish clay with tool marks. Except for a minor glaze flaking at the mouth rim, this rare and beautiful vase is in excellent condition.
Size: height: 25.3cm, body diameter: 15cm
