Rare Copper-red Stem Bowl, 17th Century

Up for auction is a Chinese porcelain stem bowl decorated with rare underglaze copper-red and inscribed with blue-and-white. The stem bowl was potted with grayish white porcelain and covered with clear glaze with distinct bluish tint. The exterior of the bowl is decorated with a band of vining chrysanthemum flowers in vivid copper-red pigment. There is a red flower motif at the center of the bowl's interior. An eight character inscription written in blue pigment encircles the stem. The interior of the hollow stem is left unglazed to expose the coarse porcelain body. It is unusual to find combination of underglaze copper-red and cobalt blue on one vessel. Except for a small chip the unglazed base of the foot rim, the rare stem bowl is in excellent condition.
