Rare Korean Iron Brown Dragon Jar, 18th Century

This extremely rare and beautiful jar is painted with a difficult to handle pigment of underglaze iron red by the 17/18th Century Korean potter. The ovoid body was boldly painted with a single striding dragon chasing a flaming pearl. A band of flame motif separates the short mouth rim and the maim decoration. A continuous stylized wave pattern surrounds the bottom of the round jar above the short foot. The base is covered with a few thin glaze patches and adhered with kiln sands and grits. The iron pigment is most burnt dark brown where glaze is thicker. There are also spots of bright brick red where glaze and iron pigment combination matches better. The rustic and natural jar has many surface kiln cracks which were infilled by the potter after firing. The overall result is a vessel full of energy with free-flowing lines, unpretentiously form, exciting interplay of color and form. This is magnificent jar is reserved for serious collectors and scholars who can appreciate the beauty and know the importance of this type of ware among oriental ceramics. Except for a few shallow chips at the foot ring and infilled kiln cracks, the jar is in excellent condition.
