We are offering a very powerful Buddhist sculpture from 16th Century Momoyama Period of Japan. This large wooden hand is the survived fragment of an old Buddhist sculpture. The finely carved hand must has been attached to the arm of a Buddhist Guardian usually seen holding a weapon in a standing position. At the end of the wrist is an elaborate multiple cloud motif which was the end of the now-missing sleeve. The wood surface is covered with partially worn original gilt and pigments of red, blue, black, and green. Fragment of the originally metal nail for attaching the hand to the sculpture remains at the end of the wrist. The magnificent hand is displayed on an old fitted stand. Other than the pigment wear and a stable crack at the palm, this wooden Buddhist Guardian's hand is in good condition.
