Beautiful Inlaid Punch'ong Fish Dish, Choson, 16th Century

This is a beautiful Korean punch'ong wares with inlaid decoration of fish among waves. The well-potted dish has a flat plate sitting on a small cylindrical foot ring and rises to a shorted rounded cavetto and a narrow flat rim. The center interior panel is boldly decorated with two fish facing opposite direction among stylized wave pattern. The decoration was executed with skillful inlaid of white and dark brown slips. One can not help but noticing the three-dimensional effect of the fish scales precisely rendered by the difficult inlaid technique. The mouth rim and the exterior were futher inlaid with fine key frets pattern. The glaze is of clear grayish green color. Other than minor glaze wear, this beautiful early Choson inlaid celadon dish is in excellent condition. This dish is part of the Rai Collection acquired in early 1960's in Japan.
