This is a fine Korean blue-and-white alms bowl with beautiful painting. The finely potted bowl has a rounded lower body tapers toward a rolled mouth rim and sitting on a curled foot ring. The bowl modelled after early Buddhist monks' alms bowls used for receiving offerings from fellow Buddhists. The exterior is simply decorated with a spray of wild flowers on each side and a flying butterfly. The near abstract painting was executed with swift freehand painting in watery cobalt blue. The center of the interior is painted with a single "longevity" character in key-fret style. The foot rim is unglazed with adhered kiln sand and grits. Except for the two silver-lacquer restored rim chips and cracks as photographed, this rare and beautiful alms bowl is in good condition.
