Imperial Bamboo Veneer Pendant, Qing Dynasty

We are offering a very beautiful Qing Dynasty Imperial abstinence plaque made of bamboo veneer called Zhu Huang, or Bamboo Yellow, by scholars and connoisseurs. Abstinence plaques were worn by Qing Dynasty court officials during ceremonial periods in the forbidden city. These plaques were invariably inscribed with two Chinese characters "Zai Jie,or abstinence" on one side and Manchuria characters on the other side. This particular plaque was made by a very difficult technique of applying the inner layer of bamboo veneer over a wood core and than the surface was carved to achieve the elaborate decoration and inscription. The resulting product is this elegant and royal plaque made from a humble material befitting the pious occasions. The rare bamboo veneer plaque is in excellent condition with a superb patina developed from years of handling.
Size: 8.2cm X 5.2cm X 1.0cm
