Pottery Tile Ink Slab, Koryo, 12th Century

We are offering a very rare scholar's art made from a Koryo Dynasty pottery tile. The circular tile has a beautiful moulded Buddhist lotus roundel which was a popular motif during the Koryo Dynasty when Buddhism was very popular. Many excavated tiles of this pattern are know in public and private collections. Since 16th Century, Chinese and Korean literati's elites started to use ancient tiles of various shapes as ink slabs after minor modification. An ink well was formed by grinding at the back of this particular tile. The ink slab area has accumulated black ink from years of ink cake grinding. The tile ink slab has been preserved in a fabric-lined metal box which also functions as a stand. The tile is in excellent condition except for a few chips at edges as photographed. This is a rare 18th or 19th Century Korean scholar's art made from a 12th Century pottery tile.
Size: diameter: 17cm; thickness: 2.7cm
