Korean Blue-and-White Square Plate, Choson, 19th Century

This is a very rare and beautiful Korean blue-and-white square plate made for the Choson court by kilns in Punwon-ri during the 19th Century. The thickly-potted large plate has an unique square side with a tall wall and rounded corners sitting on a large shallow foot ring. The interior is decorated in typical light grayish blue cobalt pigment. The center well has a roundel of stylized lotus flower with pointed sides and is surrounded by a continuous lotus petals outside of a double-ring. Three geometric layers of bee-hive patterns of expanding sizes fill up the reserve space of the bottom plate. The interior wall is lined with an innovative key-fret pattern consisting of two zig-zag lines. The exterior is painted with four minimalistic flowers at each corner connected with vines. The large convex base inside the shallow foot ring is plain with some ground-off glaze imperfection. The thick foot rim is unglazed and exposes fine white porcelain body typical of "punwon" wares. This large and rare Choson blue-and-white plate from Punwon-ri kiln is in excellnt condition with minor glaze wear and kiln glaze imperfection at the base.
