Large Blue-and-White Double-Gourd Vase, Ming Dynasty



This is a very large and beautiful Ming Dynasty blue-and-white double-gourd shaped vase The vase has a tall lower section and a shorter upper globular section and a small mouth rim. Both sections are painted in dark purplish underglaze cobalt blue typical of 16th Century ware from the Jiajing or Wanli period. The main decorations on both sections are playful birds flying around or perched in a flowers and tree scenes under stylized cloud motif. The short cylindrical mouth rim has two flower panels among fish scale background. The reserve space of the exterior is elaborately covered with fine ruyi and flower panels painting. The mouth rim is also covered with pale blue pigment. The base is glazed white without decoration and is scattered with small glaze pore holes now stained with accumulated dirt. The thick foot rim is unglazed with conspicuous marks of potter's paring knife. This rare and large Ming Dynasty vase is in excellent condition with only minor glaze wear.
