This is an extremely beautiful early Chinese Buddhist sculpture of a wood Guanyin. The large statue was carved from blocks of wood with Guanyin seated in a meditating position. His hands are in a teaching gesture. The facial expression, garment folds, and other body features are sensitively rendered. The surface retains most of its original white, blue, green, and red pigments now finely crackled. The iconographic style of this Guanyin and the materials used are consistent with other extant Song dynasty wood Buddhist statues. This is a rare Buddhist sculpture which was acquired in Japan in 1962. Except for some extremities loss and chips as photographed, this wonderful early Buddhist statue is in excellent condition with beautiful original pigment mostly intact.
