This is a very rare early Ming gilt bronze incense box with beautiful relief decoration. The oval shaped box has rounded straight side sitting on a short foot rim. At the end of each side is a cylindrical ear with perforation for suspension. Each side of the exterior walls is decorated in low relief with two phoenix facing a central flower. The shallow cover has a central raised knob with reticulated flower. The exterior of the cover is adorned with beautiful flowers and scrolls. The decorated surface is covered with rich gilt. The base inside the oval foot rim is inscribed with a six-character Ming Dynasty Xuande (1426-1435) Imperial mark in an intaglio central recess panel. The interior is plain and covered with black patina. Except for very minor gilt wear and a few small dent, this gilt bronze incense box is in excellent condition. Ming Dynasty Imperial bronze ware with such elaborate decoration and sumptuous gilt is very rare. This is the item for collectors who have their eyes for Chinese Imperial works of art.
