Dated Korean Inlaid Celadon Bowl, 1269 AD, Koryo
We are offering this rare dated Koryo inlaid celadon bowl as part of our weekly showcase of important Korean porcelain from our collection. The heavily potted round bowl has a wide mouth and a small short foot. The exterior is decorated in fine white and and black clay inlaid of chrysanthemum roundels vine scrolls and pointed leaves border bands. The interior is adorned with a central decoration of two long-tailed cranes flying among clouds. The center indented well is inlaid with two Chinese characters " Ji Shi" which is the cyclic year corresponding to 1269 A.D. The center well is surrounded by a double ring and a band of Ruyi heads, The upper rim is lined with a band of stylised grass border within a double-ring above and a single ring below. The glossy clear glaze with bluish tint covers the gray stoneware body. The shallow base and the foot ring are glazed with trace of remaining spurs and adhered sand and quartz particles. Except for a faint hairline crack at the rim, this rare bowl is in excellent condition with pristine glaze and wonderful inlaid work.
