Fine Carved Hardwood Brush Pot, Qing Dynasty



We are offering this finely carved hardwood brush pot from the scholar's desk. The brush pot is in a cylindrical shape with a tapered lower section. The reddish brown hardwood with dramatic grain pattern is carved on one side with elegant scene of scholars in a water and towering cliff scenery. The other side is left plain to show the fine wood grain. The base has a circular opening plugged with a later plug. Except for a small crack at the lower side extending to the flat base, this fine hardwood brush pot is in excellent condition. The surface has developed a fine mellow patina from years of handling.
