Fine Soapstone Imperial or Official Seal, Qing Dynasty

Up for auction is a rare and fine Chinese imperial or official seal made from high quality dark green soap stone. The large square seal is carved from a solid block of soapstone with a arched loop handle. The seal face is carved with a broad border which is typical of seal made for imperial use during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The four-character seal is intricately carved with precise and beautiful archaic calligraphy. We have not tried to decipher the meaning of the seal, but we have provided photo of the impression for your research. Judged from the shape of the seal, the quality of carved calligraphy, and the wonderful patina of this beautiful seal, we feel that this seal must has been used in the imperial court or by a high-ranking official. We date this seal to be 19th Century or earlier. Except for some chips at edges and some minor pits on the surface, the seal is in excellent condition. Size: 10cmx10cm square, height (including handle): 10cm
