A Fine Japanese Tea Bowl, Chawan, 19th Century



This is a rare and beautiful Japanese chawan for traditional tea ceremony from the Oribe kiln. The odd-shaped black tea bowl is called " shoe-shaped chawan or Kutzu Chawan" for their resemblance to Portugese shoes. The large bowl is glazed black with a small panel covered in crackled white glaze where simple geometric patterns is painted in black. The rustic and zen aesthetics permeates through out the bowl. This is a rare find for serious collectors of Japanese tea wares. The black oribe chawan ( Kuro Oribe Chawan ) is in excellent condition. Size: Widest diameter at mouth rim: 16.1cm; Height: 7.0cm
