Fine Japanese Miniature Wood Mask, 19th Century



This is a very beautiful Japanese wood carving of a miniature Noh theater mask. The mask is elegantly carved in very fine details with an exaggerated facial features. The surface is covered with a fine layer of brown lacquer. The back shows the wood delicately hollowed out with a bridge where a two-character carver's signature is carved in intaglio. This type of small wood carving might have been used for hand puppet. This magnificently carved miniature mask is in excellent condition with only minor lacquer wear.
